تشريح حصان مصري من القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي

كانت البيطرة قد أصبحت علما له قواعده وأصوله لأن الإسلام عني بالرفق بالحيوان وعلاجه وتغذيته ونهانا عن عدم تحميله ما لا طاقة له به أو تعذيبه، ومنع قتله إلا لضرورة. وحرّم وشمه أو جدع أنفه أو وخزه بآلة حادة. وقد حقق العرب قدرا عظيما من التطور العلمي في ميدان الطب البيطري حيث عني بأمراض الخيل، والمظهر الخارجي والصفات العامة المميزة للفرس والحمار والبغل ووظائف الأعضاء الخارجية والعيوب الوراثية في الخيل.
